Hello!
Welcome to our FAQ page.  We hope you find the below information helpful.  If you have a question not answered below, please reach out to us.

Q: What makes the FeedRight different and special?
A: We believe the ability to have complete timing and portion control, through the phone/tablet app, combined with the ability for the same feeder to distribute powder and palletized feeds.  Our experience with using other auto feeders always left us disappointed and frustrated.  So, we set out to create our own that answered those problems and limitations.

Q: How do I use this feeder as a multi-day feeder?
A: The FeedRight is designed with efficiency in mind by providing maximum portion and timing control to the Farmer.  It was designed with 24 feed columns making it an 8-day automatic feeder if feed is distributed three times per day during post-hatchery growth stages.  When programing a feed schedule the user has the option to distribute one or two feed columns per scheduled time.  If the growth of fish reaches the maximum capacity for one full feed column, per feeding, the user can choose to operate the feeder twice per scheduled feed time by selecting the x2 option.  If each scheduled feed time uses two columns of feed in order to raise up to twice as many pounds of fish, the feeder becomes a 4-day automatic feeder. This provides even more flexibility to the user to be creative with feeding.  Note: when starting a new feeding schedule, the first feeding needs to be fed by hand.  The reason is, there’s always one feed column directly over the Feed Release hole in the base of the feeder.  So, the first morning “breakfast” feeding must be fed by hand, and the feeder will take care of the rest for as long as the schedule remains the same and there’s no interruptions.  Simply keep refilling the feeder.

Q: What are the x1 and x2 selections on the scheduling page?
A: Understandable question.  These two options allow the Farmer to decide how many feed towers distribute feed at each feeding time.  The x1 selection will rotate the feed tray 1 position distributing 1 tower of feed for each feed time it’s selected.  Likewise, the x2 selection will rotate the feed tray 2 positions distributing 2 towers of feed for each feed time it’s selected.  For most situations the x1 selections for each feed time will probably be appropriate.  However, when systems and fish size get larger the x2 selection may find application.

Q: Can I use this in my hatchery or is it only for grow out stages?
A: The FeedRight Automatic Fish Feeder is designed for use from hatchery to grow-out growth stages.  For example:  In the hatchery stage of tilapia, feeding is required every two hours.  This is why 12 feed times have been provided, greatly freeing up, you the Farmer, in your many responsibilities.

Q: Why does the FeedRight feeder have a power cord and not battery powered?
A: Great question. We’ve thought long and hard about this.  In the event that power is lost and a system’s filtration is temporarily down it’s very important that feeding stops until power is restored to prevent further water quality deterioration.  The FeedRight utilizes a corded power supply with this in mind and will automatically stop operating in this type of event.  If it was battery powered, the feeding would not stop and that could increase the odds of mass fatality if the Farmer can’t be onsite immediately to tend to the system. Having a corded feeder is a safety measure from our perspective.

Q: Do I need a phone or tablet to program the feeder?
A: Yes, you will need a phone or tablet to connect to the feeder via Bluetooth.  In time, we hope to enable Wi-Fi to access a series of features for remote access which the feeder’s electronics is already set up for.

Q: Can I use more than one FeedRight at a time?
A: Yes, absolutely.  We have designed things so multiple feeders can be used in proximity.  When you open the app, it will scan for all nearby FeedRight feeders.  Each feeder will initially be called “FeedRight”.  When you connect to each feeder you have the ability in the Settings Page (small gear icon in the upper right corner) to rename each device for where it’s being used.  Such as: Tank3, Hatchery or Tilapia Grow Out for example..  This is will help distinguish each one so you know you’re connected to and programming the correct one.

Q: What type of feed can be used with the feeder?
A:  The FeedRight is designed to be used dry feed only.  We’re also very excited that the FeedRight can distribute powder as well as pellets.  No need for separate feeders for hatchery and grow-out.  The FeedRight does both!

Q:  Does the FeedRight need maintenance?
A:  We recommend a good practice of removing the feed tray every could weeks to clean out any feed powder residue.

Q: Who do you feel will use this feeder?
A: We believe our FeedRight is versatile and would be a great asset to hobby farmers with small backyard systems up to semi-industrial facilities.  We believe the later will find more use in hatchery settings because of the large amount of powdered feed that can held and distributed in each feed column.

Q: How much should I be feeding my cohort of fish?
A: Feeding charts provide a good start for understanding what the feeding requirements are during each growth stage.  These charts are easily found online.  However, the appetite of fish can fluctuate as well.  It’s important for the farmer to pay attention to how the fish are eating and adjust accordingly.  For example: the Farmer may notice that their fish consume more in the mornings and evenings than the afternoon.  The “lunch” portions could be lessened in the feed columns to accommodate this.  This not only aids in being more efficient in food cost but also reduces unnecessary inputs into the system that would deteriorate water quality.   Controlling feed inputs combined with a highly effective multi-stage filtration system is best for maintaining water quality.

Q: Are automatic feeders safe?
A: Auto feeders are absolutely safe and have been used all over the world for decades.  It’s important to acknowledge that auto-feeders do not replace the Farmer.   They become an extension of them.   Attentive Farmers will ensure their systems are maintained well.  Over feeding can contribute to water quality deterioration.  The Farmer may wish to feed less than what feeding charts suggest to help prevent over feeding.

Q: Why create the FeedRight feeder?  Aren’t there enough auto feeders on the market?
A: Thank you for asking.  Not really.  There is a big gap in available automatic feeders between home aquarium feeders and large scale fully automated rail driven hopper systems.  There are very few options and styles available mainly focused on distributing feed into ponds.  There are auger-based feeders, on-demand feeders, vertical rotating barrel feeders and belt feeders.  These are all fine for what they do but each have major limitations and are insufficient for serious growers – but it’s what is used because it’s all there has been.  We believe the FeedRight Feeder reintroduces a simple concept in a new application and stands out significantly from all others.

Q: Are there any accessories for the FeedRight?
A: Yes.  We are very pleased with our Directional Feed Drop add-on component.  This part allows a standard off-the-shelf 1.5” threaded male PVC part to attach to the underside of the feeder under the feed release hole.  Using the Directional Feed Drop part and a stock PVC part from a local hardware store users can have more options with where to position the FeedRight on their system and direct where the feed distributes into their tank(s).  We are also working on a mounting tray that again; users can be creative with to create the best ultimate solution for their needs.  In addition to all this, we are also working on a second tier, that will stack on top of the FeedRight base feed tray for doubling the capacity of feed it could distribute.  The FeedRight is designed for use with only ONE added tier feed tray.  The motor strength capacity has been thoroughly tested for full capacity when using the second tier.   Staking additional tiers on top of the second tier will exceed the motor’s strength capacity, should never be done and will result in unit failure.

Q: How many pounds of fish can this feeder support or raise?
A: Several variables come into play when attempting to determine this.  In order to attempt to answer this we need to create a base-line.  Our base-line will be raising tilapia to 1lb each and feeding 3 times per day.  When tilapia reach around 1lb each (454g) it’s standard practice to feed them 1% of their total bio mass.  With that in mind, each of the 24 feed columns of the FeedRight can hold up to 50g of 3/16th size pelleted dry feed.  In this scenario, the FeedRight would be able to raise up to 35lbs of tilapia when used as an 8-day feeder, feeding 3 times per day.  We would consider this the base-line maximum.  However, users have the ability to experiment with feed scheduling and could probably experience greater production.  For Example: If users choose to use the x2 option per feeding, using the feeder as a 4-day feeder, this could double the output to 70lbs.   Production could also immediately double, from 35lbs to 70lbs with the use of our second-tier accessory without even changing any scheduling parameter.  Combining these two methods to increase production together and up to 140lbs of tilapia could be produced, provided the entirety of the system could support that as well.  We would love to hear how you use the FeedRight!  Please let us know.  Our email is on the Settings Page!

Q: Can I use the FeedRight as a dog or cat feeder too?
A: Of course!  The FeedRight is designed to distribute dry pelleted feed.  Yes, it’s focus is for fish but can be used to feed any animal that is fed dry pellet feed.  It will not work for wet food.
